Esophageal Surgery

Esophageal Surgery

Esophageal surgery refers to a variety of surgical procedures aimed at treating disorders of the esophagus, which is the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. Conditions such as esophageal cancer, achalasia, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and esophageal strictures can often necessitate surgical intervention. These surgeries are typically performed by a specialized surgeon known as an esophageal or thoracic surgeon.

Common Types of Esophageal Surgery

1 Esophagectomy

An esophagectomy involves the removal of all or part of the esophagus and is typically performed for patients with esophageal cancer. It may involve reconstructing the esophagus using part of the stomach or small intestine.

2 Fundoplication

For patients with GERD or acid reflux, a fundoplication surgery is performed to tighten the lower esophageal sphincter and prevent stomach acid from backing up into the esophagus.

3 Esophageal Dilation

This procedure is used to treat esophageal strictures (narrowing of the esophagus), often caused by scar tissue or long-term GERD, by gradually widening the esophagus.4 Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM)

This is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat achalasia, a condition where the lower esophageal sphincter fails to relax, causing swallowing difficulties. The surgery involves cutting the muscle at the lower end of the esophagus using an endoscope.

Conditions Treated with Esophageal Surgery

  • Esophageal Cancer: Cancer of the esophagus may require an esophagectomy or chemotherapy, depending on the stage.

  • Achalasia: A motility disorder where the esophagus does not move food effectively.

  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Chronic acid reflux that may damage the esophagus and lead to complications such as Barrett’s esophagus.

  • Esophageal Strictures: Narrowing of the esophagus, often due to scarring from acid reflux or injury.

  • Esophageal Varices: Enlarged veins in the esophagus, often caused by liver disease, which may require treatment to prevent bleeding.
